SOME FACTS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS
 
Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Schizophrenia and Substance Abuse Disorders can occur at any age. They can strike regardless of a person’s race, gender, religion or financial level. They are treatable medical illnesses.
 
Mental illness is the most prevalent health problem in America. It is more common than cancer, lung, and heart disease combined.
 
Mental illnesses are brain disorders that cannot  be overcome through "will power". These illnesses are not a reflection of a person’s character or intelligence.
 
Many treatments for mental illnesses are successful and highly effective. Their success rates are similar to, or greater than treatment for other medical illnesses.  Effective psychosocial supports and medications have helped many individuals significantly improve their lives.
Early identification and treatment is very important and effective. Recovery is increased and the further harm related to the course of illness is reduced with early interventions.

If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty, there is hope. With proper treatment and supports, those in need of treatment can get better.
 
There are many treatments available, if something does not work for you, don’t lose hope. Alternative therapies, peer-supported projects and recovery-oriented initiatives have had wonderful successes.
